How Noema's FIRE Calculator Works

Financial Independence isn't built by chasing a number. It's built by understanding every assumption behind it.

It estimates how your wealth could grow before retirement and how long it could support you afterward.

The Three Stages of Your Wealth Journey

Stage 1

Accumulation Stage

Building your core wealth engine from your present age up to your target retirement age through compound growth.

  • Monthly Compounding: Returns compound monthly based on pre-retirement CAGR.
  • Annual SIP Step-Up: Increases monthly investment annually matching salary hikes.
  • Annual Bonuses: Adds yearly lump-sum contributions adjusted for inflation.
Stage 2

Life Goals & Wealth Planning

Accounting for major real-world capital outlays (home buying, child education, weddings) while tracking progress.

  • Inflation Adjustment: Auto-inflates today's goal estimates to future costs.
  • Corpus Deduction: Subtracts goal expenses at specific target ages without stopping compounding.
  • Milestone Triggers: Tracks age achieved for ₹10L, ₹1Cr, and Half-FIRE targets.
Stage 3

Drawdown & Retirement

Transitioning from asset building to sustainable monthly passive income generation through your life expectancy.

  • Post-Retirement Return: Applies lower-risk conservative return rates during drawdown.
  • Inflation-Adjusted Spending: Increases monthly living withdrawals each year.
  • Longevity check: shows whether the estimate lasts to age 85.

Understanding Your FIRE Number & How It Is Calculated

Your FIRE number is an estimate of the portfolio that could fund your yearly spending at your chosen withdrawal rate, usually 3% to 4%.

1

Inflated Future Annual Expense

Calculates nominal annual living costs at target retirement age adjusted for inflation.

💡 Example Walkthrough :

If your current monthly living expenses are ₹50,000 (₹6 Lakhs/year) and you plan to retire in 25 years assuming an average inflation rate of 6%:

  • Inflated future annual expense at retirement = ₹6,000,000 × (1.06)²⁵ = ₹25.75 Lakhs/year (₹2.14 Lakhs/month).
  • Required FIRE Number at a 4% withdrawal rate (usually 3% to 4% in India) = ₹25.75 Lakhs / 0.04 = ₹6.44 Crore.

Understanding the Wealth Projection Graph

The Wealth Projection graph visually maps your net worth trajectory year-by-year across your lifetime, using distinct visual indicators:

Corpus Curve (Blue Area)

The solid blue curve and shaded gradient track your net worth from present age through compounding accumulation and post-retirement drawdowns.

FIRE Target Line (Dashed Target Line)

The dashed target line marks your FIRE number. Where the corpus curve crosses it shows your estimated FIRE age.

Retirement Boundary (Slate Vertical Line)

The vertical dashed line marks your target retirement age—switching from monthly SIP accumulation to living expense drawdowns and goal payouts.

Understanding Your Results & Metrics

FIRE Number

The total inflation-adjusted corpus required at retirement age to achieve full financial independence. Calculated via future annual expenses divided by the withdrawal rate.

Projected Corpus

The net worth your plan could accumulate by retirement age, incorporating current portfolio, monthly SIPs, annual step-ups, bonuses, compounding returns, and intermediate goal deductions.

Additional Monthly SIP

If your plan falls short, Noema uses a Binary Search algorithm (O(log N)) to estimate the SIP step-up needed today to bridge the retirement shortfall.

FIRE Age

The estimated age at which your accumulated wealth reaches or exceeds your target FIRE Number, signifying when early retirement becomes mathematically viable.

Peak Corpus

The highest net worth your portfolio reaches across your entire timeline before post-retirement withdrawals or major goal deductions reduce the principal balance.

Money Lasts Till

A longevity check that shows whether the estimate lasts through age 85, or the age when the corpus runs down under inflation.

Financial Planning Assumptions

Planning Financial Independence requires realistic, conservative assumptions due to domestic market dynamics and consumer price inflation.

Expected Return (10% to 14%)

Reflects long-term CAGR from equity mutual funds & index funds during your accumulation years.

Inflation Rate (5% to 7%)

Accounts for CPI inflation in India so your future retirement lifestyle maintains real purchasing power.

Annual SIP Step-Up (5% to 15%)

Raising your SIP as your salary grows can shorten your timeline to FIRE.

Withdrawal Rate (3% to 4%)

A lower rate leaves more room for market falls early in retirement. 3% is the more cautious choice.
