Should you surrender your endowment policy, make it paid-up, or keep paying?
Last reviewed: 22 Oct 2026 · Noema Research · 7 min read
Stopping a policy feels like losing what you've paid, but those premiums are spent whichever way you choose. What counts is what each option leaves you with from here. Compare three paths at the maturity date: keep paying, make it paid-up and invest the premiums, or surrender and invest everything. In our example, counting the surrender value you give up, keeping the policy earns about 2.1% a year from here. Even after paying for term cover, surrendering wins if your investments earn more than about 3.8% a year. Before you exit, replace the life cover with term insurance.

Example values
Estimate
At maturity, in 14 years
Surrender and invest: about ₹18.4 lakh · Paid-up and invest: about ₹15.5 lakh · Keep paying: about ₹11.0 lakh (future rupees).
Counting the surrender value you give up, keeping the policy earns about 2.1% a year from here. Surrendering comes out ahead if your investments earn more than about 3.8% a year.
Life cover ends when you surrender. Arrange term cover first.

Why stopping feels like a loss
Years of premiums make stopping feel wasteful. But that money is gone in every option; the only question is which path is worth more from today.
Your three options
Keep paying
You pay every premium left and get the maturity value plus any declared bonuses, with life cover until maturity.
Make it paid-up
You stop paying. The cover and maturity amount shrink in proportion to the premiums paid, and you get a smaller amount at maturity.
Surrender
You exit now and take the surrender value. Cover ends today.
Where to find your numbers
Ask for the surrender value today, the paid-up value and the maturity value if you continue, in writing. Use those figures, not an agent's estimate. Under IRDAI's product rules (master circular, 12 Jun 2024), your surrender value is the higher of the guaranteed surrender value, as your policy papers call it, and the special surrender value, payable once a full year's premium is paid; your benefit illustration lists them by year.
How to read the result
Keeping the policy is like an investment earning the rate the calculator shows. If you can reasonably earn more elsewhere, after replacing the cover, exiting usually leaves you better off.
Replace the cover first
An endowment policy mixes insurance with saving. Before you stop, buy term cover for what your family needs, so there's no gap.
When keeping it makes sense
When few premiums are left, when the maturity value is close, or when you couldn't get new cover because of age or health.
A fourth option: a policy loan
If you need cash but want to keep the cover, many policies allow a loan against the surrender value. Interest builds up and is taken from the payout if unpaid, so ask for the rate in writing.
Tax at maturity
Maturity and surrender amounts may be taxable depending on when the policy was issued and its premium size; check before you decide.
Common mistakes
- Comparing premiums paid with the surrender value instead of comparing options from today.
- Exiting before new cover is in place.
- Counting bonuses that haven't been declared.
- Spending the surrender value instead of investing it.
FAQ
Should I surrender my endowment policy?+
Compare what each option leaves you with at maturity. If keeping earns less than you could reasonably earn elsewhere, and you replace the cover first, surrendering or going paid-up often comes out ahead.
What is the difference between paid-up and surrender?+
Paid-up stops premiums but keeps a smaller policy until maturity. Surrender ends the policy now for a one-time payment.
Is the money I paid lost if I surrender?+
Part of it may be. That loss has already happened; staying in only helps if the policy earns more from here than your alternative.
Where do I get my surrender value?+
From your statement, branch or online account. Ask for it in writing.
