How much car can I afford in India?

Car loan calculators tell you the EMI, not whether you should take it. A simple test is 20/4/10: put at least 20% down, borrow for 4 years or less, and keep the EMI within 10% of your monthly take home pay. At a 9% loan rate, a ₹1,00,000 take home pay supports an EMI of ₹10,000, a loan of about ₹4,01,848 and a car of about ₹5,02,310 on road with 20% down. Running costs come on top: on a ₹10,00,000 car, insurance, fuel, service, interest and lost value add up to about ₹12,25,586 over five years. Estimates, not predictions.

The 20/4/10 rule
Buyers often start from the car and work back to an EMI. Start from your pay instead.

A stricter version keeps EMI plus fuel, insurance and service within 10% to 15% of take home pay.
- 20: pay at least 20% of the on road price upfront.
- 4: borrow for 4 years or less, so the loan ends while the car still has value.
- 10: keep the EMI within 10% of monthly take home pay.
Max car price by take home pay
| Monthly take home | EMI cap | Loan | Max on road price |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹50,000 | ₹5,000 | ₹2,00,924 | ₹2,51,155 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹10,000 | ₹4,01,848 | ₹5,02,310 |
| ₹2,00,000 | ₹20,000 | ₹8,03,696 | ₹10,04,620 |
| ₹3,00,000 | ₹30,000 | ₹12,05,543 | ₹15,06,929 |
A larger down payment raises the price you can afford by the same amount.
The five year cost of a ₹10 lakh car
The EMI is only part of the bill.
| Cost | Five years |
|---|---|
| Loan interest | ₹1,55,586 |
| Insurance | ₹1,10,000 |
| Fuel | ₹4,00,000 |
| Service | ₹60,000 |
| Value lost | ₹5,00,000 |
| Total | ₹12,25,586 |
That is about ₹20,426 a month on top of the down payment you recover partly at resale.
EMI or SIP: the trade off
Every rupee of EMI is a rupee not invested. The ₹8,00,000 loan costs ₹19,908 a month for 4 years, ₹9,55,586 in total. The same ₹19,908 invested monthly for 4 years at an assumed 12% would grow to about ₹12,31,010. That gap is the opportunity cost of the loan, not a reason to skip the car. Estimates, not predictions.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a 7 year loan to fit a bigger car.
- Counting ex showroom price instead of on road.
- Ignoring fuel and insurance in the budget.
- Using gross salary instead of take home pay.
- Emptying the emergency fund for the down payment.
FAQ
How much car can I afford on ₹1 lakh salary?+
On ₹1,00,000 monthly take home pay, a 10% EMI of ₹10,000 at 9% for 4 years carries a loan of about ₹4,01,848. With 20% down that is a car of about ₹5,02,310 on road. Estimates, not predictions.
Is a 7 year car loan a good idea?+
It lowers the EMI but raises total interest, and the loan can outlast much of the car's value. The 20/4/10 rule keeps the term to 4 years or less.
Is an electric car cheaper to run?+
Running costs per km are usually lower, but the purchase price is often higher. Compare the five year total cost, not only fuel.
How is a company leased car taxed?+
A car provided by your employer for personal use is a perquisite valued under the Income Tax Rules and added to your salary. Check your Form 16 for the value.
