How many mutual funds should I have?
Last reviewed: 26 Oct 2026 · Noema Research · 3 min read
Many investors hold eight to twelve funds and believe they are diversified, while most of those funds own the same large companies. For most people three to five funds cover every role: one broad equity core, one or two satellites for mid or small caps, one debt or liquid fund for stability, and an optional international fund. Beyond that, each new fund usually adds overlap, not diversification. Estimates, not predictions.

Why more funds is not more diversification
A long list can look diversified while owning the same companies repeatedly. Count distinct jobs in the portfolio, not account entries.
Count funds by role, not by name
| Role | Funds needed | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Equity core (index or flexi) | 1 | Long term growth |
| Mid or small cap satellite | 0 to 2 | Extra growth with more risk |
| Debt or liquid | 1 | Stability and near goals |
| International | 0 to 1 | Currency and market spread |
| Tax saving (old regime) | 0 to 1 | Only when useful for the tax regime |
Compare tax saving choices.
How to check overlap
Too much overlap means multiple funds may be doing one job. Compare the top ten holdings by weight. If two equity funds share more than about half their holdings by weight, consider keeping one.
- List the top ten holdings of each equity fund.
- Compare the names and weights.
- Keep the option that best fits the role, cost and process.
A worked example in rupees
Rohan, 32, runs ₹25,000 a month across nine funds. Four are large cap or flexi funds holding the same top stocks. He moves to four: ₹12,000 in an equity core, ₹6,000 in a mid cap fund, ₹4,000 in a debt fund and ₹3,000 international. Same money, fewer statements, clearer roles. Estimates, not predictions.
Stop new SIPs in dropped funds first; redeem old units only after checking tax and exit loads.
When more funds are fine
Separate goals with separate dates may need distinct holdings. A large corpus may spread manager risk within a role, though two funds per role is usually enough.
Common mistakes
- Adding last year's top fund.
- Owning the same category twice.
- Selling everything at once and paying avoidable tax.
- Ignoring the debt role.
